our Name
WHY Healthyums?
When we were deciding on a name for our new venture (back in 2017), there were a few criteria we had in mind. First, the domain name had to be available (we needed to be able to have a healthyums.com website). Second, we wanted to convey what type of food we intended to offer at our restaurant. Healthy, yes. But more than that: great-tasting AND healthy. "Healthyums" checked all the boxes.
WHY impossibly yummy?
Before we had even opened for business, we received a negative review online. The reviewer said we should be sued for libel because we intended to call our business "Healthyums." Apparently they thought it impossible for "healthy" and "yum" to have anything in common. We took it all in good humor and came up with a tagline to go with our libelous operation: "impossibly yummy!" Is it impossible to make healthy food that tastes delicious? We think not!

our mission
WHY nonprofit?
1. Volunteers. We started out being completely family-run, but several family members moved on to other things and left us short-handed. We were faced with two options: raise our prices considerably so we could afford to hire at least one additional team member or become a nonprofit so we could legally accept volunteers. Option one wasn't even really an option. We didn't want to raise our prices any more than necessary. Eating healthy is already expensive; why make it more so? Which got us thinking about... 2. Being able to provide healthy food to those who want to eat healthy but can't afford to. True, we already did this to some degree; if someone walked in off of the streets, we fed them and didn't charge them anything. But we wanted to extend our reach to include those who are willing (and usually prefer) to pay something towards their meal but really can't afford the typical pricetag associated with words like "healthy" and "quality." 3. We've never been about making money. If we had been, we would have run more according to industry standards as far as using more premade items and lower cost ingredients (i.e.: not quite as healthy or as high quality). If we weren't in it for the money, and were more or less operating as a not-for-profit business already, didn't it make sense to become a full-fledged nonprofit?
HOW do we operate?
1. Our Board. Decisions for the Healthyums nonprofit organization are made by a Board of Directors. Members of the board propose changes, ideas, etc. which are discussed by the board members. A resolution regarding the proposed subject is then put up for a vote. If the majority of board members vote in the affirmative, the resolution passes.
2. Our Executive Directors. Executive Directors are elected by the board and manage all the behind-the-scenes stuff for our organization.
3. Our Volunteers. Without our volunteers we couldn't do what we do. The Healthyums restaurant is completely volunteer-run, as is the Healthyums gift shop. Our volunteers are the ones who actually make our mission a reality. Want to join our mission? We have plenty of volunteering opportunities and can work with any (even limited) availability. See more volunteering info here.
